All males (and potentially future females) 18 and older are eligible (and automatically placed) for the armed services draft. This cannot be avoided because everyone with a Social Security Number will be enrolled. Only by rescinding US Citizenship, the SSN attached, and all other social benefits attributed to its program can a person not be forced to participate in at least ~24 months of local community services that support national interests.
A registrant may make a claim as a "Conscientious Objector" by appearing before his local board to explain their religious or ethical beliefs and why they oppose violent conflict. The person may provide written documentation, personal appearances by people who can attest to said claims/beliefs/ethics, or video statements from relevant parties. The written statement should explain: what the beliefs/ethics are, how they contrast with participating in war, how one arrived at these feelings, and more.
Two types of service are available to conscientious objectors, and is assigned due to the individual’s specific beliefs. The person who is opposed to any form of military service will be assigned to alternative service for ~24 months (i.e. conservation, caring for the very young or very old, education, health care) within a local community. This program attempts to match "Conscientious Objectors" with local employers. Many types of jobs are available; however, the job must be deemed to make a meaningful contribution to the maintenance of the national health, safety, and interest. The person whose beliefs allow him to serve in the military but in a non-combatant capacity will serve in the Armed Forces but will not be assigned training or duties that include using weapons.
The sample letter is written for a person who wants ~24 months of alternative service locally, rather than a non-combatant role abroad.
SAMPLE LETTER
To The Selective Service District Appeal Board,
I am writing to express my sincere belief that the wars these united states participate in are wholly unconscionable and it is my request for reclassification as a "Conscientious Objector." These beliefs are not based on politics of any spectrum: left, right or centre. I have carefully considered the principles of non-violence and pacifism through both religious research and deep moral contemplation. From this I can now, no longer in good conscience, participate in any form of military service or support. My beliefs stem from a deep commitment to non-violence, compassion, and the sanctity of all human life. I believe that war and violence are never justified and only perpetuate cycles of harm and suffering. I cannot reconcile these values with the demands of military service, which often involve the use of force against others.
I am deeply troubled by the impact of these wars on individuals, families, communities, and entire societies! The immense carnage has and will continue to cause untold human suffering, destruction, and loss of life. It breeds hatred, fear, and division, and it perpetuates cycles of violence and vengeance. Thus I cannot willingly participate in any activity that contributes to such harm and suffering. I believe that there are better, more effective, and more humane ways to address conflicts and promote peace. I am committed to supporting non-violent solutions to conflict, such as dialogue, negotiation, mediation, and reconciliation. I believe in the power of compassion, empathy, and understanding to bring about positive change and transformation in the world. These beliefs stem from not only an ethical viewpoint that has come about through different events in my personal life, but also from a deep belief that all religions in a syncretic way express this need to 'turn the other cheek.' I am also deeply committed to serving my community and making a positive impact on the world in different ways than the armed forces provide. I believe that there are countless opportunities for service and contribution. However, after age 35 I request complete removal from all selective service systems and drafts in their entirety.
I understand that my request for "Conscientious Objector" status may be met with skepticism or misunderstanding. I want to assure the Selective Service District Appeal Board that my beliefs are deeply and sincerely held. I have thoughtfully and carefully considered the implications of my beliefs and the consequences of my actions. I am prepared to face any challenges or obstacles that may arise as a result of my stance. Again, I respectfully request that the board grant me classification as a "Conscientious Objector." I believe that my convictions are genuine and sincere, and I am committed to living out my beliefs with integrity and courage. I am prepared to fulfill my duty to society in ways that are consistent with my beliefs, conscience, ethics, and values. While I understand that Alternative Services are available should a draft occur, I would require these positions to be in support of my local community rather than abroad / out of country. Whether that duty pertains to conservation, caring for the very young or very old, education, health care, or food preparations are all acceptable roles I can fufill.
Thank you for considering my request,
